How much light is too much light?

If you have plants, then use the proper lighting the plants need...

If you do not have plants then lighting is simply for your viewing pleasure... and I do not think 6x 3' lights would be necessary...

If you do not have plants using all the wattage you put on the tank in lighting then algae will...

As the above poster said, it's all about what you're stocking.

If you have a stock list, the planted tank forum goes over lighting a lot and has some very good stickies.

I would say use them if you think it makes your fish look better. But keep them off when your not watching your fish or you risk a algae bloom. Also keep an eye out if the increased lighting has a negative effect on the fish's behaviour. The may no care for the extra light.
