bellevue, ne
ive decided to buy a canister filter, but how much more do i need/ is best. i have the penguine 350 (made for a 75 gal) how many more gph do i need or what size filter should i get. im looking at the ehiem classics and i dont know if is should get the one rated for 66 gal tank or the one rated for a 93 gal tank.

the one for the 93 gallon. they advertise their filters for big tanks. the one for the 93 gallon will definitley keep your tank clean and if the penguin fails you will have it by itself to keep it clean.

I would start with looking at desired turn over rate as a base for deciding, instead of what it is rated for. They do not know what you are stocking. 75 gallon at 7 times an hours would be around 525g/hr. Maybe even more if you have a heavy bio load.

rule of thumb i go by is turn the tank over 10 times an hour for smaller tanks. the huges tanks is a lil harder but i try. 10 times an hour will be plenty of filter with a moderate amount of fish. im moving my 20 gallon up to 300 gph from 200 gph next pay check though.

IMHO, I would just get another Penguin 350. That way, you don't have to buy different media for different filters and if you get the parts mixed up, it won't matter. I am a huge fan of Whisper, Penguin, and TopFin.

Another Penguin is nice. I like them ..

But if your heart is set on ehiem then I say the 93.. that way it can do the job on its own, if needed. then also when you get that 100g you can put it on that one

i do have a heavy bioload because of the clown knife i have but my nitrate cycle is working well and with the filter i have i dont have any trouble with nitrites or ammonia. but my water is a little cloudy. it would be a lot cheaper to get a peguin but i also want whats best for my fish.
