how much purigen does "the bag" hold?

100 ml It would be cheaper to buy it in a bottle and put it in a media bag. Can get a 2L bottle for around $60.00.
Just buy the bulk amount you want and put it in any large, fine mesh media bag.

I have 250ml in both of mine, can fit more but probably less than 500ml. That being said if I were to use more purigen in my fx5 I would get another bag so that I can arrange them better and decrease bypass. I don't remember the dimensions of the bag but I would definitely look into it and take into consideration the size of the basket you are trying to fill. In the past I had hypersorb(precursor to purigen) in standard mesh bags with Velcro and it worked just as well as the bag plus I didn't have to worry about the zip tie breaking and spilling the purigen.
One of the benefits of using the bag though is that it will withstand the bleaching process used to refresh the purigen. If you're lazy, like I am, and refresh it in the bag then it's something to consider. Also you need to make sure that any other bag you might want to use will be fine enough not to let the purigen to leak out. Most of the readily available bags are meant to hold carbon and other similar sized media and the openings might be to large to hold purigen.
