I need to treat my ray tank with salt as one of my females has internal parasites and has stopped eating. I put the temp to 86 and added prazipro. I want to add salt but what would be a safe dose as I have these also in the tank...mbu puffer, lenticulata pikes, rtc x tsn, ornate bichirs, tigrinus, black arowana and 6 other rays.

Now that I have added the prazipro does that mean I shouldn't change the water for 7 days. Tank is 450 gallons with a 150 gallon sump.

I have treated with Prazi in the past, and it works fine all by itself.

Hopefully you started out with a big water change before adding the Prazi..good thing to do.

The best way that has always worked for me- 1.treat for three days 2.50% water change 3.treat for another three days 4. 50% water change...then back to normal schedule.

This has always worked for me!! Good Luck!!

Hey Trevor what are your symptoms? Is it just the female that has stopped eating? What was she eating and why would you think internal parasites? I'm guessing you have something stressing her out. Which female? How old? Any mature near mature males? How much water and how often a week do you change out. With the bioload you have in there now I would be changing 30-50% every second day at least.

Symptoms:White stringy fecal matter and starting to lose weight.
Just one female motoro stopped eating? About a 10" disc.
Eating: Scallops, dew worms and raw shrimp. Mostly shrimp and scallops for the last 2 weeks as I ran out of worms.
One male near maturity but it isn't bothering any of the females.
Water changes: 40% Every 7 days. I have done some big water changes this past week as I had to get my Nitrites and Nitrates down. Not enough media for the bioload I guess plus I overfeed them so now I am cutting back. I increased the media and added "cycle" and "bacter boost".

Tank has been running for two years now and was overpopulated before and now it has been changed up(different fish) but it must have been the bio load of the rays.

isnt salt for external things?

I would treat with parasite meds first, then after
treat with salt (to kill of any remaining), ( or vice versa but not at the same time)

wait for the pros to chime in tho

Ya I would say she was re-actng to the water. Try doing 25% waterchanges everyday for the next week and see how she starts to come around. It's amazing what giving clean water to a ray will do and how the rays own immune system will fix most problems that occur. Try waiting on the prazi or if you want to keep treating add enough prazi back each waterchange to the percentage of water you took out and treat for 7 days then stop for 3 days and begin treating for another 7 days. It doesn't hurt to up the airation in the tank also for awhile to see what happens.

Thanks I will give it a try. I already added the Prazi so should I continue like you said (water changes each day and replace prazi lost)? Damn I hate when the rays get sick as they aren't cheap to replace!
