Salt is only useful in certain applications like treating for illness and injury. Its not good for long term use

Looks to be acclimating alot of new fish, new tank.. I would say it's a good practice.

You'll be better off using rift lake salts for those malawi cichlids. Aquarium salt and sea salt are sodium based (sodium chloride). Your african cichlids evolved in calcium based salt (calcium chloride). Most lfs that carry africans also carry this salt. A large number of online dealers carry it as well.
