How much sand should I put in my 125g

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I put 200lbs in my 220. Id say between 100-150. Also my brother has a planted 125 and he put close to 200lbs in it. Its more of a personal preference. What type of sand are you using?

Start with 100 - 150lbs and see how you like the look of it.

you will need deeper sand if you have plants. I have a biotope with no plants and have only a half inch. the deeper the sand the more you have to stir it so it does'nt form gas pockets.

I have about 150 in mine which is plenty for my plants and anchoring rocks or driftwood.

I have ur answer as I just did this. Start with 50lbs and you will get a thin layer. Add more if you think it's too thin.

I plan on using pool filter sand. Figured 50 may not be enough with 100 being just about right - but wasn't exactly sure. Can't argue w/the price though. Saw some at Tru Value for 10.99 (HTH) for a 50lb bag. Gonna go out to Home Depot tomorrow and check theirs - along with a couple of pool supply stores.

I just put 100 plus probably another 30 (I had used some out of one bag for a couple of 20 longs) in my 125. It is 2-2.5 inches thick.

First time I used pool filter sand. Love it so far. No rinsing. Put it in filled it up, let it settle. It was clear by next morning!!
