How much Sand?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Usually it takes a pound of sand per gallon to get the desired depth of one inch. Bigger tanks have a bigger bottom glass naturally so takes more to get it fully covered to the desired one ince depth.

It took 120lbs to get the one inch depth in my 6ft x 18in 125s
By 40b took 40lbs

My 40b took 40-50 lbs for 3", I generally use like 15 for 2" in my 10s and 25 for 2" my 20s. If you only want a 1", 50 should be enough for a 70.

would one inch be enough for american cichlids? I've heard they like to dig around and thats what i have in my tank

You give them more, they will just dig more. One inch gives them a nice depression so they believe they have a pit suitable for fry.

If I messed with his pit, he would dig it out as your moving sand in....

Id say a bag and a half. I usually do two bags but I like having lots of substrate. Its been the only way to get the bio load i need without a sump.

Well thank you guys for your help. the sand came today and 50lbs was perffect for my tank.
