I've been thinking about getting a smaller silver Aro for a while now, and today at the LFS they had a 6-7" beautiful one swimming around. He had great orangey/pink coloration too, and looked almost exactly like this guy: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=138190

Price: $129. Big ripoff, I know, but so is everything at a store. They're asking $60 right now for a 2.5" distichodus. But then again I got an 8 incher for 10. So I know I can make an offer if he's there for a while while I make sure I'm ready for this kind of fish.

What should he cost? He's the right size for my tank plans (upgrading my 90 to a 180 in the next 2 weeks and then a 3-400 monster late next summer when I move) so I don't mind paying a bit of a premium. Under the lighting I've got on this tank he'll look amazing too.

At least I think he's the right size for me. How much should I expect him to grow in a 180 over the next 15 months? Should I go smaller, like 4"? Any smaller than that and I worry he'd get picked on. Or should I wait longer... the goal is to make sure that he won't be too big for a 180 in August 09.

I should call them and ask if he's the same fish that I saw the day they got him. That would've been about 6 weeks ago, and he was about half the total size... maybe 3-4 inches long and obviously skinnier. If so, that means he's been around a while and growing fast and they'll be desperate to get rid of him. He's crammed into a 2.5 foot wide partition right now.

40 bucks would be average price in my area. That aro will grow to be 24" over the next 19 months, may be a little quicker or a little slower. Once that size their growth slows greatly and it would be fine in the 180g for another year or so.

I got my 4inch for $24 but I saw about a 6 to 7 inch in another store for $70.

40-60 is fair in my opinion ;)

yeah 40 or 60 seems fair, but I know some of my local stores have a "meet or beat" policy that they don't really advertise. If you can fine one cheaper somewhere else and prove it, you may get lucky. It worked for me with my piranhas, I got the store to go from $20 to $12.

Baby arowana with eggs on its belly is $12, without is $20. 6 inches is $48, (in Chinatown mott street NYC), in petland...etc is $70.

:ROFL:I'm sure the OP would have found this info very useful 6 months ago:screwy:
