My friend gave me what we thought was a forkshali tiger cuz it got the s*** beat out of it in his tank. It’s looking like it’s a vitattus the more it heals. It’s about 7-ish inches now and in a 4x4x2. It’s doing really well as of now in this tank, but how much time do I have until an upgrade is a must? I’d really like to keep this guy

You might not want to do or hear this, but my advice would be to rehome it, get the big enough tank, and then get another one, for the simple reason that things often don't go as planned, this being more true the shorter the time frame is.

I was once in a similar situation. I once had a 243 liter tank with a pangasius catfish, intending to build an 8,000 liter in my basement for it. While I lost it to a pathogen before it outgrew the tank, and while I no longer have interest in pangasius catfish, I ended up with only a bit more than 1/8th of that planned tank's volume in the end, removing pangasius catfish from my list of options.
So you can see what went differently from what was intended.

Good luck.

I’m hoping to keep it since this is one of my dream fish, but I doubt i could rehome it even if I wanted too, there’s not many people here that could handle something like this and the LSF that I can rehoming larger fish to probably couldn’t take something like this

I suppose I'll have to leave the answer to the tiger fish experts, then. Here's hoping you can get that larger tank soon and keep it.
