being a newbie :newbie: to the wonderfull world of the poly, I could do with some advice....

How much should I be feeding my senegal? He is 7", not sure how old. I have tried keeping to the usual aquarium rule of whatever they eat within 5 mins, but he just keeps eating....ive never had such a hungry fish....!!

They will eat until they freaking blow up. I agree I've never owned a hungier fish than my senegal. Personally I feed my bichirs until they are fairly chubby (sorry a very relative term I know :))2 to 3 times a week.

i can't go by the 5min rule as my poly's seem to be a little slow at getting in hunting mode. i feed mine twice a day fasting usually once a week. i have to feed a wide variety of foods because of their individual pickiness but all in all i'd say let them eat until they get the gut. not a keg more like a pony keg :)

hmm, I'm not sure.

I just sort of grab a couple handful's of shrimp, thaw it, chop it up, and toss it in the tank.

How many times a day do you feed him and what ?

At the moment - twice a day, a mixture of dillies, bloodworm, carniverous pellets, brine shrimp and tubifex - all of which he loves!!!

Do they need vegetable matter??

I feed mine twice a day usually ,the only time mine will eat veg is if he swallow's a pea by mistake. I feed him cat fish pellet's or earth worm's or as a treat fresh maggot's and occasionally bloodworm cos it's dear.

Are maggots ok to feed ? Was wondering about those, wondered if they carried disease?

I buy em from local fishing bait shop, the white/pink ones you can get blue ones but i avoid them (im not sure about colouring in my tank). But only as a treat cos i think they are high protien .Just give em a wash in a sieve. My bro washes and dries them with kitchen paper so they don't wriggle away (load's of tank's) and some will float then.I just wash em and chuck em in.

i usually just drop loads a food in the tank.
its does have 8 polys though...
they usually eat everuthing they can find til their bellies pooch.
and still look for more. :D
