How much water to transfer

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
keep as much as possible. no need to treat the water if it is already been treated.

The most important thing is to keep the same filters that are established.

I dont treat any of my water. I have well. Yes i will be changing it over in a few hrs so the filters will be kept wet so i dont lose and BB.

Got to agree there's nothing in the old water you need or want. Just move the filter over and fill the tank with fresh dechlorinated water. It's just like doing a 100% water change.

I changed from a 75 to a 150 and I put in fresh dechlorinated water, switched my old cannister over and put a bag of the old rock substrate in the wet/dry. I got my water temp to match the old and threw the fish in. Been a month now and all survived.

I agree. A couple of months ago, we ended up having to move all of our tanks around in order to fit more tanks in the house. On the smaller tank (a 75), we saved the water, because the water heater had run out of hot water, and we needed to transfer the fish immediately. However, on the 180 and 125, we added all new water. All three tanks are fine. If your filter is going to off for a while, it's a good idea to move media into a shallow pan with tank water so that oxygenation can still take place. There's no need to save the water -- put that energy into ensuring the bacteria in your filters doesn't die.

Imo.... I would have to say i disagree with the NOT keeping any water from the established tank and transferring. I say this because i have done this before with my pond..... i had a pond running.. and i decided to do a 90% WC and putting new water in AND of course even treating it with water conditioner and even using the already established filter/media with all the BB in it. And all of my fishes became weakend and slowly died off one by one within 10 hours.
So after that incident.... i ALWAYS save most of the old tank water and already established filter/media to transfer over to the new tank... and NEVER had a problem that way.
So with a lil more work.... I'd rather be safe than sorry! ;)
