I have a 100 gallon tank with a 50 gallon sump. I seem to be losing about a gallon a day due to evap. Does this seem like a lot or normal. Also sump does not have a lid and there is an open backed canopy on the tank.

That seems to be quite a bit. Do you have a top on the tank?

I have a 125 with a big Rubbermaid sump that is open & I don't get much evap. at all. Maybe a gal. a week.

A lot also depends on the humidity level in your house. I lose a lot more in the dry winter months than I do in the more humid summer months.

I am going to be adding some tops to the openings on the tank as well as one for the sump. I will have to see how much of a difference that makes.

I have a 75g with hinged glass tops that are pretty well fit to accessories hanging off the back (also to keep escape artists in) and I usually have to top off maybe 1 gallon a week. My grow out tank is a 10 gal and it has a not so well sealed top and that looses alot more water to evaporation, maybe a gallon every 3 days or so.

Well in comparison to some of the other tanks mentioned I guess less than 1% loss due to evaporation a day is not bad. Just worry about my pump running dry. I will add the tops for sure.

7 gallons shouldn't let your pump run dry...You do water changes at 30% a week right?
Then just remove 40 gallons and replace with 45-47 gallons...

You could use an auto topoff solution to get you through the week until it's time for a waterchange. There are a few DIY examples that should be cheap and easy. You can also buy it ready made but I think it's like $150.
