Under Water Bolling Lane
I'm using two filter socks in my sump. I've cleaned them out 3 months ago. Before i cleaned them the water was really restricted that flows through them. Now they are starting to get backed up again. Is it ok just to buy new one to get a better flow?

I have a bunch, the dirty ones go in a bucket and get washed in the washing machine. I get about two weeks out of mine but have rays so they are messy.

So yeah get a new one and use it to switch out with the dirty ones so you don't have to clean them as often. Your not tossing the dirty ones are you? What micron are they?

I change mine out with a clean set every time I do a water change. I clean the dirty socks with bleach and rinse really well. Then soak them over night in a bucket with extra decholorinator. Air dry and they're ready to go back into rotation. I have 3 sets of socks in rotation so I alway have a clean set whenever I need them.

I wish I got two weeks out of my filter socks JK47!! The 100micron ones on my 1400L lasted three days before they needed changing, I got so pissed off with the regular maintenance I'm almost put off using them again and looking for alternatives.

As for the original question, I wouldn't buy new ones every time, but it would be good to have a second pair so you can just swap them out when they get dirty and get the tank running again while you clean the dirty pair out. You can change them as often as you want, the more frequently you remove physical waste from your system the better, but generally you can wait until they look like they're getting close to overflowing.

I have 5 sets of 3. I have rays so mine get clogged fast. When I use new ones I can go about 3-4 days and then I swap out. I soak in bleach water for a day or 2 and then rince them very very well and hang them to dry for at least 2 days. When the socks are old they last very little time before they need changing. but really the point on mechanical filtration is to collect the crud and remove it before it decomposes.
