ok. so i have my rena xp3 canister filter running in my 75gal aquarium and want to know how often you need to replace the activated carbon in the filter. can you please help?

Howdy,

You run it for a few days after setting up a brand new tank, or for a few days after successful treatment of a disease with medication. Besides that, carbon has no place in filtration.

what? do you have a rena canister filter? there is an activated carbon pouch that goes in the filter and i want to know how often to replace the carbon pouch. i was told once a month or so.

replace with an inert biomedia like matrix or the like.

carbon should be used "..a few days after setting up a brand new tank, or for a few days after successful treatment of a disease with medication. Besides that, carbon has no place in filtration."

THIS.

They sell it to make money. It masks problems. Get some ceramic rings or something to take it's place.

i use yarn pot scrubbers to collect biomedia, but what actually filters the water if not carbon? because isn't it the carbon in the filter cartrage in HOB filters that actually cleans the water? so isn't it the same concept with canister filters?

the bacteria that are held in/on the bio media filter the water. They convert ammonia to nitrite to nitrate. Carbon just absorbs tanins/meds.
If you keep up on regular water changes you don't need it.

i'm so confused! i thought that the carbon in the filter actually collected the bad bacteria in the water while the filter media collected the good bacteria. like i always thought the reason you use carbon cartridges in HOB filters is to clean out the waste in the water. so how does the water get cleaned in between water changes if there is nothing in the filter that filters out the bad bacteria from the water?

there shouldn't be any bad bacteria.
