It seems that at any one point at least one of my fish has some kind of fin damage from fighting, there is not a lot of aggression in the tank in the day but when the lights go out the damage seems to happen.

In general it seems to be the Oscar and Jag, but then one morning I will wake to find one of the others has a big bite taken out of their rear fin.

What's your experience?

thats cichlids for ya ;) haha lots of my fish have little bits outta their fins but lately I have noticed a lot less, but fighting is imminent with cichlids so I come to expect it to a degree.

Cichlids are going to fight either way so that damage is normal, as long as it's minimal it's nothing bad

i wouldent worry about minor fin damage. it comes with the territory of keeping fish with attitude problems such as a jag :)

most of the fish in my 250g get along great, since all except the oscar were pretty much added from juvi's. the only one that dont get the point to back down is my syno catfish. i had seen him go after eggs with a red devil attacking him time and time again. man were his fins tattered badly.

It happens in my 125 mixed cichlid tank and also in the 55 mbuna tank, and as long as there is nothing more than just occasional nipped fins I don't make any issue of it. If the fins are split deep or anything serious then the divider goes up or some salt is added.

My female firemouth is always beat up. She is a trouble maker. Lately she has been jaw-locking with my midget JD. Thing is, she WINS! She pushes around everybody, just looking for a fight everyday.

My convicts and salvinis also have torn up fins. They have "domestic disputes" all the time. If it gets too bad I pull the males out for a week and let the girls have the tank to themselves.

Glad it sounds normal then, your right about FM's mine do it too, they even gang up and go against my Jag! Obviously they back down pretty quick!

My cichlids are dicks to eachother. My Green Texas likes to beat up on EVERYONE. After a while all my others tell him to ease up by gang banging him and beating him up real good. I think I need to separate them into different tanks.
