I am going to hook up a battery operated air pump, that turns on when there is a power outage, to an air stone, and keep the air stone in the tank forever, so it will be ready whenever. Can air stones be kept in water forever if they are only getting used roughly 10 days a year, or do they have to be replaced on a regular basis?

I think they get soft in acidic water other than that they last forever until you snap the part you connect the air line while your trying tho remove the airline

I bought a used aquarium setup about a month ago...and I was told the whole setup was at least 25 years old. The air stones are working great.

I think that the main problem with old air stones is...the plastic nipple that the airline tubing connects to can get brittle & break when removing or installing air lines. So you end up replacing the air stone...not becasue the air stone is old...but becuase the plastic nipple cracks or breaks.
