From what Ive read it seems like if a weekly water change is needed then you really need a wet/dry and sump like you would have a salt setup. 50% water changes weekly is alot of work with another 110 and a newborn child. If I really needed to get a wet/dry and sump I might as well just go to a salt tank...Is this correct? I just want to know what Im getting into before i start

This is question with several different answers - it depends on what size discus you are thinking about adding to the tank. For discus, hardest partis raising them to adult size - 5" or so. If you are getting juvenile discus they will actually need daily water changes because without frequent water changes they do not grow nice and round instead will be stunted and look like ovals with big eyes. If you choose to go with adult discus, you can feed less and therefore do less water changes. I have several show tanks of adult wild discus and do 50% water changes on them every 4-5 days and they do just fine. A wet/dry filter in my opinion is the best and most efficient way to keep water quality high, I use them in all my freshwater and saltwater tanks.

+1 with D.O.
Keeping discus can be easy it can be complicated... it all comes down to what you want! If you were to go with Juvies it would require lots of feeding and freaquent water changes to achieve healthy big discus. If you went with adults you would minimize the work and can sit back and enjoy your investment. In all my 55's and 75's I run double stack #4 & 5 sponges and in my 150g I have a wet dry.

In my grow out tank I do anywhere from 6 to 8 feedings daily with 80% water changes once sometimes twice daily. In my breeder tanks once every other day @ 80% and the adult tanks I'll do 80-100% once a week.

 Agree with above. I chose to go w/ sub-adults, a bit less work intensive. Still must maintain high water quality but feeding 3 times daily & W/C's 75% every 2/3 days is doable for me. "T"

wet/dry filters are an option. many people use hob with or without sponge filters. I use cannisters and like how quite they are. all will work as long as it's enough. the larger the discus, the less wc's need to be done. I have adult wilds and I am down to one 70% per week and it seems to be fine. nitrates are never above 5ppm and after two years I have never medicated my fish for anything. get adults or sub adults and you will find that they are'nt much harder than any other fish.
