How old is my Gar?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It all depends, you can't tell age 100% on length. He could have been in a smaller tank, underfed.

Like the other gentleman said you can't tell based on size, but I would figure that if he's in good shape a FL Gar about that size would be about 1 year old.

I have 2 baby FL gars right now that I got when they were TINY, and these guys eat VERY well and are about 7-8 inches as well. I've had them for about 8 months or so. The reason I say yours might be a year old is because my boys eat really good and are filling out fast.

Thanks for the reply, I got him from a reputable fish store but they had only had him for a week. I am going to call him one year old then, he will have his birthday with the calender.:D

fish that size is what we would call young of the year (YOY), so less than 1 year old for sure. within the first year FL gars tend to get to around 11-14".

other than YOY and some yearling fish, gars are generally impossibly to accurately age without looking at various structures such as otoliths, branchiostegal rays, fin ray cross sections, or scale cross-sections.--

Yes, that would do it, how could I forget. Make sure you check otoliths, branchiostegal rays and the flux capacitor and let us know what you find. Once we have this information then we can better idea on your fishes age.

i imagine you'd still struggle ;)

...although finding a flux capacitor on a gar would be quite noteworthy--

Maybe the flux capacitor is why they look so similar to species from millions of years ago.

Reading this highly intoxicated after a new years party, I will have too google all those terms and figure out what they mean. Definitly a project for tomorrow. Thanks for all the replies.
