Here.
Hello everyone,

I have a 150 gallon tank and it is being filtered by an FX5. I use to have a power head pushing water/air mixture into the tank, but my black aro does not like much water movement. Now that I took the power head out and repositioned the FX5 nozzle - he is swimming around the tank a lot more. This is why I want to get a regular air pump coupled with an air stone.

From your personal experience, how powerful of an air pump is necessary for my setup? Tetra Whisper has a 100G with dual outputs, but why get that if a 40G single is enough?

I need some personal experience with this matter.

i have both my aro's in two 50's and am using a powerhead with air mixer (the hose thing that sprays air into the powerhead output) and one percision pr7500 air pump each tank attached to a sponge filter with airstones inside.

more air is better for aro and helps prevent gill curl.

you dont need an air pump the surface agitation from the fx5 will put plenty of oxygen into the water

agreed with harlan.

aerators are a good thing dont get me wrong, it adds current too! its good, makes tank interesting
but if you have a canister filter , the outlet can aggitate the surface, that little aggitation is enough for many fish!
fish do not require that much disolved oxygent.

but in saying that, aerator is not bad, even a tube with large bubbles coming out, is enough.

if you have an over flow trickle filter system - you dont even need aerator at all.

I just used an Aquaclear 50 Powerhead w. the air mixture. I think this would help with the d.o. in the tank. I had it on before, my main concern was that the black aro doesn't like surface movement.

Exactly how do you have your nozzels positioned and how many inches are they from the surface of the water?

The manual wasn't exactly thorough with the placement but only instructed 6" length of tubing was needed from the top of the rim....

Thanks!
