I'm thinking of adding a ghost to my tank (I'm keeping a florida gar and more peaceful SA cichlids). Anyway I'm currently growing out a couple of small severums in a 55 and was hoping I could also grow out a BGK in there. The sevs are probably 1"-1.5" right now and growing quickly...will a 6" or so BGK eat them? I've had them in the past and never seen them show interest in feeders so I thought it might be OK but if not I'll just wait until the sevs hit 4" or so before adding the BGK.

The BGK aren't very predatory. Mine acts more like a scavenger.
They have poor eyesight but they make up for that with an electrical field in which they can sense other fish and crustaceans. For a bgk to even attempt to catch a sev would be amazing to me. I think you wll be ok in that department. But make sure that when your sevs get bigger that they aren't picking on the bgk and nipping fins.

All in all the BGK is very docile and I think you will have a good experience with them.

it should work but keep an eye on him, some bgk like to bie out other fishes eyes, mine does

If the BGK is small enough you should not have any problems. But they do like small fish. Mine has never been fed live food and when he was about 9" long I though of adding some Rummy nose tetras to the tank as I had no schooling fish, next morning their were 3 left of the 10 I put in and by the end of the day the other 3 were gone, but I had one very content BGK. Not aggressive but have been known to eat tetras.

Thanks guys, I may hold off a bit to be safe unless I see a really small ghost. I think the one at the LFS was 6" or so.

they should be fine i've seen 6-5''-6'' BGK kept with neon tetras so i'd say your fine

I have read several places that Neons are their favorite foods.
(Just do a search on Black Knife Ghost fish + Neon Tetras)

"They should not be kept with neon tetras and other very small fish because the black ghost knifefish will eat the small fish. In the aquarium black ghost knifefish will eat carnivore pellets and obviously neons, though neons are rather expensive to use as feeder fish

Mine have eaten Guppies, Endlers, Tetras and the like…

Mine big one at a Betta once…

Mine don’t bother my Cichlids… Except when they have eggs/fry and then my BGK’s will take just about any risk to enjoy the feast… but have proven themselves to be extremely capable fighters…

Sevs are fairly tall bodied… so that reduces the risk… but I’d still say a 1” fish is at risk with a 6” BGK in the tank…
