By the end of this summer I plan on installing a 1000 gallon in wall fowlr tank in my basement.

I originally planned on housing a black tip reef shark like my lfs does in there 8x4x4 tank. But I realized it was too small and the sharks that I could house, aren't active swimmers.

So right now I'm doing the planning and budgetting for tank. I'm intereted in getting a few tangs (yellow, naso, unicorn, hippo) and a few triggers (clown, niger) and a lionfish. Possibily puffers and angels too.

I could get these in there small size for $20-30 or I could get them in there show/xxl size for $200-1,000 each. I really don't want see fish the size of quarters in a monster tank, but nor do I want spend thousands of dollars of fish unnecasarily.

Do any of these fish grow to a reasonable size in 2-3 years? Or am I stuck buying the larger fish. And how long does it take them to get to show size.

The tangs, triggers & lionfish would grow to full size in tree years. I would put the yellow & the hippo in first because they should not fight. Then i would add the naso as to the unicorn these fish are pigs.Next the niger then then your lionfish.Last but the pain in the butt handbiteing clown.Go wiyh smal fish so you can watch them grow

lions dont mix too well with triggers, angels, and such... they tend to get nipped at... but yeah, they grow fairly quickly..

maybe get the yellow and blue tangs somewhat large (4-6") and everything else can be kinda small

the lion though i would get as large as you can without him eating the other fish

Lion getting picked on? or lion picking on the rest?

Lions are awesome, wish i could get one. To many inverts though :(

Being picked on

thanks everyone for your suggestions. I picked up a large yellow tang last night.

But I noticed a fin problem on him. I'll post it on another thread.

Lions & Yellow Sailfin Tangs will get along fine. Yellow Salifins have lots of protection. Don't try and catch one by hand. It will also grow fast enough in that size tank in a short time a standard one will work. They grow very large.
