I was wondering if they were rare to have in the hobby I haven't ever seen them before I got them and I still can't find them

Nope, they are pretty common. I see them at petland discounts all the time, which is one step up from a petsmart in terms of selection.
About 10 years ago, they were very common in my area when I lived in Wisconsin, at local club auctions, you could usually pick up a bag of 10 juvies for $5 or less, and every LFS had them. Adults and semi adults cost more.
Fish popularity is usually cyclical.
I would guess they have become less popular because of their high aggressive nature, and that to be realistic, to house them properly one needs a 200 gal+ tank.

They come & go in Houston Texas area , just got one around 8 months ago a little baby here he or maybe she is now

I have not joined one because I am really now starting to get serious with ten dontou know of any in central Ohio???
There fairly common as juveniles, but as with alot of big ca cichlids large mature adults are very rare.
