I was just curious how realistic it would be to build an aquarium big enough to house black tip reef sharks like 40,000 gallons. I have no intention on doing this but I am just curious if it is even possible if you built your house and knew you were going to do it and designed the basement like a pool so the only thing you would have to change is have a one glass wall. I have seen a bunch of people say unless you are willing to spend millions on it it can't be done but you think about a pool I think it would be comparable (not the expense of the fish, decorations, or salt,etc...) just the construction of the tank. What do you all think, just curious.

Thanks

Just depends on if you want the shark to have as much room as you have in the house.

It's not NEARLY as costly as people think. And you don't need 40,000 gallons.
Built into the house will be the costly part, just be smart about doing it. Concrete goes a long way, and finding a surplus/second hand acrylic window isn't too hard. Personally, I'd do an above ground pool with a window cut into it. WAY cheaper and easier to relocate. If you end up with a big shark tank built in, it can be a deal breaker if you ever want to sell the house.

Definitely possible, in fact I talked with a very wealthy friend who was interested in something like this (I'm in construction). I don't know what budget you think will be appropriate, but it's essentially a modified indoor pool. The emphasis is obviously more on the acrylic to see inside instead of an area around and above the pool and access into and out of the entire thing. I was starting to figure out how to be able to design something that could be a shark tank but also be switched around inexpensively if they tried to sell the house when he decided a salt water aquarium would be way less hassle with similar enjoyment.
