How safe are glazed tiles???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not sure but you can get slate roofing shingles/tiles from a roofing store that looks great on the bottom. If you search, I know some MFK members have already done this.

Tile is essentially dirt. The glaze shouldn't be harmful to the fish. If you want to feel better, let the tiles soak for a day or two, then use them in your tank.

Tiles are made from clay or porcelin either way they are fired to 2600 degrees and then glazed and then fired at 2300 degrees totally safe for fish or people

Thanks for the replies guys. I have been soaking them in tap water and will continue for another few days. I thought they should be fine but now I will sleep better.

As far as slate is concerned, I have read that slate leaches out iron/rusts over time and is not a good idea. Best, IMO would be granite, porcelin tile, and marble if you are keeping African cichlids bc it raises pH.

Cheers
