how safe or unsafe is it to feed crayfish and/or frogs that come from my lake to my red devil?

I don't think there's any benefit to putting a live frog in a tank with your RD, other than the "coolness" factor of watching your fish hunt down a frog. :-( That poor animal will probably be toyed with, spit out, and chewed up before it finally dies. I would never do it. I don't have quite as much sympathy for crayfish, but I don't feed feeders, period. I must be too sensitive.

If you want to view it from a safety angle, any feeder from a wild source has the potential to introduce disease into the tank. It's a gamble. If you really want to give feeders to your fish, I'd recommend raising them yourself or treating for diseases after buying.

ANY AND ALL FEEDERS THAT YOU WILD CATCH OR YOU BUY NEED TO BE QUARENTINED FOR SEVERAL WEEKS BEFORE YOU USE THEM.

Thing is you couldn't use any meds/chems to treat the frogs and couldn't use copper based meds/chems on crays during the quarantine.

IMO, not worth the risk of infecting your pet with what ever could be lurking in your lake.

sounds like im gonna have to pay for feeders :irked: and dont worry i already feed him cichlid pellets and occasionally krill, i was just wondering if i had found a way to get free feeders every once in a while :chillpill:

I wouldn't feed frogs. Crayfish on the other hand I collect from the wild and feed all the time.

It's not easy to transfer parasites from an invertebrate to a vertebrate and the "parasites" you can see on crayfish are totally harmless. I just throw them in a container for a week or two and then feed at will.

It's much, much, easier to transfer parasites from feeding feeder fish.

hmmm maybe i'll have to try and catch a bunch before it starts getting too cold here and throw them in a container or a small tank and try to keep a few throughout the fall and winter

I wouldn't recomend it. I used to feed the oscar in my avatar gold fish, comets, frogs, lizards, worms...

then his poop turned white and stringy. by the time I got him some medicine, he was swimming backwards. He stopped growing, and about 6 months later, he developed HITH, which nothing seemed to help (the hexamita must have damaged his intestines to the point of no nutrient absorption). I finally put him out of his misery. Wish I would have stuck to quality pellets and freeze dried and frozen treats.

I will never feed another fish anything alive again. The benefits (if any; entertainment?) are definitely outweighed by the risk.

like modest man said no to frogs. I have fed wild crayfish countless times to a variety of fish and never had any problems. you could always buy a marble crayfish that reproduces on its own and you have lots of healthy crayfish
