How save our fish tanks from earthquakes?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You have to be realistic when it comes to earthquakes, if a big one hits then kiss your tanks goodbye. In smaller quakes, it helps if your tanks are acrylic since they can take more impact than say a glass tank of comparable size. A magnitude 2 quake shouldn't bother anything and most people would feel slight movement. Taller tanks are going to be more affected than shorter tanks. Remember that the sloshing water can throw a tall tank off it's stand. In a big enough quake even 10,000 gal tanks will move and not always side to side. The type of quake also determines the damage your aquarium might incur.

I remember the Whittier Quake, back in like '92? thing cracked our house, but our 29gal on the flimsiest crap stand you can imagine survived. didnt even spill, unlike our in-ground pool that threw maybe a third of it's water over the side. My dad was a stickler for making sure stuff is square and level. That may have helped.

I had a 5 something one last year and all my tanks were fine. they were all in the basment so that could have helped. If you really want to protect your tank get a costum tank with super thick tempered acrilik and bolt your tanks to the ground and make it extreamly level.
