or more like, how often? I try to stick with about 2-3 times a day, but i like to watch the tank and judge for myself really. i started out with 5 red bellies and 6 zebra danio fish. they lasted a few days, but this morning i fed them before i went to work, came home... and i was missing 2 zebras and 1 red belly...

forgot to mention, still been using flakes and some pellets. twice i've introduced them to some frozen (thawed) bloodworms.

throw a nice hunk of blood worms or brine shrimp or mysis shrimp or even a big piece of krill. and also u should try to keep ur school at un even numbers. like 7 or 5. obviously there was something wrong with the 1 rbp that was missing thats why they wacked him

yea i was wondering why they wacked the other RBP before taking out the rest of the zebras.

the guy at the fish store did tell me about keeping an odd number though, which is why i started out with 5. should i try introducing another one?

if u do i would introduce like 3 more. i always personally kept shoals of seven.
how big is ur tank?
oh and the one rbp that got wacked was obviously weak in some way
cuz if u think about it all of these fish now a days arent how they are in the wild. because in a spawn like all survive
but in the wild only like 10 out of every spawn survive.
survivle of the fittest u know. but piranha are the best in noticing weakness.
they really are like wolves in every way
like u will notice that u will have a alpha in the pack. thats the one that always hits the food first and is normally the biggest and sometimes u can lose a p thats tryin to take the alpha spot. that might have been what happened.
how big are ur p's anyways and what size tank?

well the thing is, i only have a 55 gallon tank. so, i wasn't planning on keeping all 5 to begin with. i just don't want to lose too many of em. they're probably about an inch and a half. with 1 or 2 that may seem slightly smaller...

well dude u could keep 5 of them in a 55g for a long time. im talkin at least 8 months. see the main thing is when they are that small is they are setting up their hierarchy at this stage thats why u could even do 7 of them total because 1 or 2 are gunna get killed off. imo the 55g will be good for like 2 years at least if its just them and maybe some rapheal cats or some cories on the bottom to clean up excess foods.
if i were u i would get some live plants and some nice driftwood in the tank. maybe a few lil claw pots.
the live plants if u have never had them are excellent i love them. first of all they absorb the nitrates from fishy poo. and carbon (so if ur power goes out they can survive longer with them). it gives ur tank alot more natural look and ontop of all that it makes the fish feel alot more at home bro.
srsly its fun to not only watch ur fish growth but plants too. and piranha wont destroy the plants like cichlids do.
post some pics of ur tank and i could give u some ideas on some nice plants in ur tank.
also u dont need all the co2 additives and such and better lighting. i have the basic set up on my tank with standard lighting and such and my plants are growing nicely.
basically u just need the co2 if u want to notice significant growth (talkin like steroid growth) for plants. but i notice how much my plants grow every day.
also make sure to do bi weekly water changes.
oh and feeding live foods makes a bigger mess then frozen ones.
one last final thought on this if u do want a few bottom feeders. such as rapheal cats or even cory cats u should add them now so the p's will reconize them and not bother them rather than putting them in later. also dither fish will help with them killing each other.
post ur thoughts ill respond here later on tonite or tommorow. imma go play my comp game now

hey thanks for the advice... i'm definitely interested in these bottom feeders you speak of! i know nothing about them and would love to pick some up. i've thought about live plants too, my buddy has a few floating plants that look pretty good in his tank. i may add one. my tank is pretty nicely setup with some hiding places though. it just seems like the back corner of the tank is where they all seem to hide.

anyways, i think i'm gonna go grab a gravel vac tomorrow. do those also siphon and do water changes for you? i have a few 5 gallon buckets.

i keep a 55g and normally i do about 3-4 buckets each water change but at least once every week or every other. see i have a heavely planted tank with 2 schools of tetras and bunch of dwarf cichlids and 5 catfish. its a busy tank. theres umm 23 fish in my 55g tank but since it is heavily planted i dont have to gravel vac unless i want to re scape it. its nice
but ive kept everything under the sun u can think of.
ive kept many different types of p's and such.
but u need to make sure to do gravel vacs at least once a month but u should do at least bi weekly water changes to promote their growth just make sure to use heavy metal and chlorine remover in your new water and ull be fine.
but u could keep 5 in there for a really long time or maybe u can get a pair and breed them that would be pretty wicked.
but i just threw the heavy live plant tank out there to lighten ur load because u really wont have to gravel vac that often. like 3 amazon swords would be enough and maybe some floaters. the amazon swords would eventually really fill out ur tank and take care of ur fish waste load.
also try not to feed ur fish feeders that are much bigger than they are because all of the guts really make ur tank filthy. its cool to watch every once in a while and its fine to do but i wouldnt recommend doing it to often and then also if u dont have a quarentine tank you risk parasites and diseases from the lfs feeders too.
sorry im not trying to tell you how to do your tank but i wish i would have known some of the stuff i do know when i first started keeping fish it would have saved me alot of money and time. just trying to pass on knowledge is all and keep us updated on them.
GOOD LUCK
