I'm very interested in learning about engines in general but more specifically marine outboards. Theres this mechanic shop that me and my grandpaw always bring our boat to anytime it needs any work done. we have been a loyal customer to it for about 5-6 years now. we know the owner but not personally. he just knows us as familiar faces. i was thinking about asking him if i can work or volunteer until i know most or all of what im doing. I'm not exactly sure on how to ask him though i am also not even sure if he'll say yeah to any of those. I'm 16 turning 17 in august and i already know some stuff about outboards thanks to the internet lol. any help/advice is appreciated thanks in advanced.

All you can do is ask .... I was kinda in your shoes almost 20 yrs ago, but it was automotives for me. My Dad was a regular there, so I went in and asked to be a grunt/apprentise, I ended up doing just that ... mainly oil changes and sweeping the shop, eventually moved up to doing some tire repair work and at one point spent everyday for a week and a half scrubbing engine parts in a varsol tank. (But then I got to help rebuild the engine afterwards). Just to give you an idea on how to approach and what to expect.
If you're already taking a form of mechanics in school its always a bonus on how to approach ... willing to start for free/volunteer, big bonus (in my case we'd agreed on a small cash weekly payment).
I'm guessing you're still in high school, up here in Canada most schools have a work experience program that goes towards your credits for graduation ... you should check into it as its also a way to get employed at a bussiness ... as they have a chance to see your work ethic, during the programs duration.

we have none of those programs here and yeah ill be starting my junior year ill be taking intro to engineering. thats the closest thing my school offers. i have some knowledge about outboard engines more than the average person because when i talk to people about it its like im speaking another language. i have a work reference that i have been working for since 14 im a few weeks from 17 now. should i go there and talk to him or email him and include my work reference and stuff about me?

I don't see why you just couldn't tell the guy what you're telling us and just ask him

let us know how that turns out though
