Can bacterial colonies survive quick changes in temp? (6-7 degrees)

Example, I have tank A with all the fish going into a new bigger tank B. The tank B is running warmer than tank A that I have had a hard time keeping the temp up on tank A, weaker heater (75-78). I need to add one of the canisters media from tank A to tank B to aid in the fishless cycle. I am hung up in the nitrite phase. Tank B is running it's lowest at (81-82). I will buy different heaters once I get paid but I need to move the fish ASAP. Tank A is leaking about 3 cups of water a day....... :irked:

So can I just unplug an Eheim and add all of the biomedia to the sump in tank B without killing it off because it's a different temp? Do I acclimate biomedia? Do you guys acclimate media? I never have but these are larger tanks than I have had in the past. Thanks guys!

well i have heard some say that bumping the temp up on a tank will increase the bacteria numbers (makes sense since most bacterias prefer warmth) so i don't think it will harm at all. if anything i would think it would make the colony grow

I know it sounds like a dumb question because we have all done it a bunch of times, using the media from one filter to jump cycle another. I usally always match the temp before I do though and these are big tanks it's taking days to do it, days I don't have. The tank all of the fish are in is about to come appart and these are my prized fish.

So if I pull the media out of one of the filters, and instant change in temp by going into the new tank won't kill off the colony?

Maybe a small small amount. I have not read any novels about the subject but in my experience I have never had trouble doing so.

I've never read anywhere that said temps swings can harm bacterial colonies...

warmer water increases metabolism and therefore makes sense it would reporuce faster, consume waste faster, as well as complete it's life cycle faster including both reproducing and dying...

Based on personal experience...

I've started (literally) dozens of new tanks by transfering bacteria from old tanks... I've moved at least 5 times while keeping multiple tanks and keeping them cycled... I've put old media in containers and sent them home with several people to jump start a new tank...

I've never shown any concern to temperature changes...

So I can't say scientifically that your safe... but practically speaking, I believe your safe...

BB for the most part, is such a simple organism that temp swings within a reasonable range won't affect them at all.

I wouldn't be too concerned until you started talking a 20 deg F change.

change in temp. does affect the bacterial colony, but it is less harmfull for them if you switch to a warmer temperature.
So I wouldn't worry about loosing all.

I wouldn't worry about going to a warmer tank at all. I might be hesitant about going to a cooler tank though

Cool thanks guys! I am going to transfer the media here in a couple hours. It's not like I don't have an ammo and nitrite spike anways right?!?! Thanks for all the advice, I have not really heard that topic covered in much detail before.
