Hello all,

As my name suggests, I am new to saltwater. I have been out of the aquarium hobby for quite some time due to moving every year or two and not wanting to go through the pain of building systems just to take them down again. However, I am finally in one spot for the foreseen future and I have gathered some parts to begin with.

I just purchased a 90 Gallon tank that I intend to pretty much just keep fish in and live rock if I can get it to live. I got the wet/dry along with the tank I purchased. The guy I bought it from never had it set up, so I'm not entirely sure it is even adequatly sized for this tank, but I'm hoping it will at least get me started with a small fish population until my wife cools down and lets me spend more money on my system...:naughty:

This design seems a bit different to me from the typical wet/dry setup. It appears there are two supply methods: one through what I can only imagine is a sock housing, and the other an inlet tube that has an opening in the bottome and a few slots cut down it's side. From there the flow seems to go into the drip tray where the filter foam can be added and through the bio area then to the open sump area to be returned to the tank.

My delima is how to build the entry to the filter, and why the sump area (6"l X 10"w X 13"t) at the begining stage of it. It just seems really strange to me. The whole filter is 24"L x 10" W x 16" T. It seems to me that the space would be better served as additional filter media storage, not just a void...

Thanks in advance. I'll be around a lot now since I've made the plunge and have skin in the game. :)

I'm a little confused by that sump too,

The drip plate and wet/dry area is usually used in fresh water where a salt water sump usually just has a void in the middle that's used as a refugium me that looks like a sump that would usually be used in a freshwater setup, but that cylinder almost looks like it may have been a protein skimmer that's missing the top part. But I've only ever seen them used in SaltWater Setups. The only saltwater sumps that I've seen that were like that were these.
