how thick

should the styrofoam be between the tank and stand? tank is 8x30"x24"

i put 2" styrofoam but i am second guessing thats to

high

I used 1" on my 500 gallon.. A friend of mine used 3/4" on his 500. But I don't know what the difference would be say between 1/2" and 2"

I think 1" is plenty, the foam is really there to take away any small imperfections in the stand, to allow even pressure across the bottom of the tank, any more than that is really over kill, unless your stand is really messed up in which case replace the stand.
