What kind of fish? You'll need marine salt & a hydrometer:

Are you refering to this fish? If so, I believe these fish are easily kept in freshwater with no problems. Mine(pictured) has lived in fresh now for quite some time and is very feisty. I do dose the tank with rock salt at 1tbs/5g...that isnt brackish. I have heard of but have never seen this fish in brackish tanks.
If this is the fish in question.

yours looks alot paler than mine and its spikes look different mines dark brownish and i know for sure that the type i have atleast requires brackish if you want them to grow bigger and live longer

BW fish should live in BW. Follow that link I gave you.

Mine is actually very dark brown. The photo is from a cellphone.
Your info on this fish is correct, but my experience is different. At 7" this fish probably wont get much bigger, 12" max, maybe, so I'm told even in a proper brackish environment.
It eats like a bulldozer and croaks constantly.
Good luck with yours.

Just a question. I'm buying Archer fish. Do I cycle the tank as freshwater then add salt as needed or should I make it brackish then cycle it with some mollies?
