we cut a tree down last fall and we have a 18" section of the trunk that has a really nice shape and ring pattern. my wife wants to coat it and use it as a seat in the back yard. would thompsons water seal be the best bet?

That's what I would probably use,maybe someone else will chime in with other ideas...Post up some picturs.
Let it dry for about a year or so, sand it with progressively finer paper, coat with a few coats of polyurethane, steek wool between coats.
