This is a first for me...asnd hopefully the last. My cichlid piled sand over the bottom quarter of my heater...I didn't think anything of it then I found some water under my stand...enough to worry me. I tried to trace the drops but they were under my tank where the stand meets glass.

I decide to check the back wall of the tank with my hand for moisture and hit a wet spot that's hot as an iron!!

the heater warmed up the surrounding sand so much that it cracked the glass where the sand was piled against it. The crack was about 5" long and had drops seaping out of it....dead tank.

BTW, this could have been a disasterous situation if the floor had broken and 90 Gallons would have run through my house...now it's an excuse to get in a 180 :-)

thats the wild thing about heaters... they get hot... i managed to drain a 300 gallon pond by putting one on a piece of egg creat in the bottom of a rubbermaid tub (sump)

thats crazy man. good luck with the new tank

wow thanks you just saved me from a major disaster lol. i gotta go reposition all my heaters be back in a sec lol
