what is the best way?

Depends on what you got. Is it soft enough that you can grove it with a masonary blade in a skill saw? If so you can use a big flat chissel and try to slab some off. If it's a hard stone you maybe able to slab it by working the grain to split it, If you don't care then build a bonfire under and around it and hose it down when it's realy fn hot. STAND BACK shards might fly. Then you could always use a sledge and do it chain gang style.

Cretaceous limestone can be pretty soft so, a tile water-cooled diamond saw should allow you to cut the stone to the exact shape you want. If the limestone is older than from the late mesozoic (like marble), you'll need a larger block stone diamond saw for accurate cuts.
Otherwise, a sledge will do the job if you're not too particular of the final results.
