Easy questions.

1. You do not need shells, just a few caves and 'open' caves.
2. Temp should be 78-80F. pH anything from 7.5-8.4
3. They should bred pretty quick, providing you have a pair.
4. Males should have longer points on thier tails.
5. Just 2 for a 15G, soon you'll wind up with 40.

If they LFS cannot sex them (and many people cannot), use your gut instinct to buy a Brichardi with the longest points on the tail. And also buy the one roughly the same size with little points.

Hope this helps!

ideally 9.0 would be great, but its nearly impossible to keep it there. 8.1 will be fine. they are like convicts, "just add water" the more caves the better. enjoy

8.8 is too high. 9.0 is very high. Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrates present a bigger problem with rising pH. Your 8.1 water is perfect.

A 15 gal. is really cramped. Ideally you would start off with 4-7 and let them pair off naturally, but in that tank thats a loy of friction. Try to find a proven pair, but the 15 still maybe a little small. As for spawn sites slate, caves, flowerpots all work good. i have a pair in a mix African community tank. They breed every month or so. I don't have the space to give them their own tank, I wish i did, because they are good parents. However, the fry are just to tasty for some of the Peacocks and Nimbo. and never get bigger than a half inch. Your pH is good, temp. 78-80 is good, just try to get as big of tank as you can.

The 15G is ok for the tiume being. What happens with Brichardi is that once they have a batch of fry, they'll have another later, yet the previous batch will help to raise the new batch. Like a big family really. So there isnt really any aggression. Of course, the occasional bite and nip is present.

They make good feeders if you have too many.
