how to breed butti's???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the first thing you need is like a 6 footx2 foot tank....thats all i really know

The Shedd Aquarium in CHicago had a large tank, many years ago, that was filled with about 50 very large buttikoferi......and many small ones as well that had been spawned there......While i don't know how they spawned, i never saw a female with eggs in her mouth....It was a crazy, frenetic, awesome tank...i think i have some photos....

Have you bred them yet?
I have 4 of them and two had chased the other two to the far top corner of the tank. I ended up removing the other pair to a 70 for now. The pair has started clearing a spot under a cave I made all the way down to the glass. There isn't a speck of sand anywhere under it. The male is about 9" and the female is about 7". I have them in a 90 all alone now. I was planning to move all 4 to a 150 until this started. They really are deepening their colors. Both have dark blue stripes and yellowish stripes. I will keep you informed on their progress.

I heard, due to adult agression issues, the best way to do it is grow a group out togethor and let them naturally pair off.

Similar to the post above, having a number of them in the tank so the dominate male can choose the dominate female, and have other 'target' fish in the tank is the best way.. If you try to introduce 2 adults they will probably rip each other apart.

I was just at my lfs and my buddy who works there said hes trying to breed a pair in their display tank(thinks its like a 300 g) right now but the female just keeps beating on the male!

i have seen it done at a lfs u need a divider and a couple of ladie butti and a big tank with divider cut so the ladies can get away from the big male.

The female is actually bigger at my lfs and shes beating the crap out of the male. They have mated before but just when shes in the mood!
