Where the gators are
So i hit the jackpot on some tanks and Jacks. I have 5 Golds and 11 BGJDs. Ill have to post pics in a min of the big male. He just looks amazing. They came from another memebers breeding project so i know that they have bred before and that the big male has done so. Not sure with which female though.

And with doing searches cant seem to get a straight answer:(

so here are the questions.

What do i need to know?

What do the water params have to be?

Are it like other animals that only breed certain times of the year or can you fool them into breeding season?

After they lay the eggs should i take the male out or divide him off from the eggs?

Any info will help thank.:D

Here is the male.

i had jacks at one point, and bred them with good results.

Raise temperature of water to about 82F, have a clay pot or flat slate rock with a air stone near it, thats where (hopefully) the females lay eggs at, and the airstone is to keep the eggs from molding.

keep the parents in the tank when they spawn, they take care of their fry, by feeding them, and moving them. If you see agression, try taking the male out afterwards

try and keep a towel or cover over the tank, so you dont startle the J's and force them to eat their fry.

once the female starts laying eggs, she should hopefully lay eggs every month or so, its always easier after the first time

if the parents dont iniate into spawing, try using mirrors on the tank, seen some success with that, never worked for me though

sweet thanks.

so with the mirrors that would be like making the fish feel like it needs to fight to breed. What about useing other fish in the tank to do so. Like convicts or just and another JD to the tank?

Using the mirror is like having a dither fish in your tank, i only had a pair in my 40gal no other fish, so thats why i used the mirror technique

i noticed you had other fish in yourtank, 5 gold severums? i dont think that would be such a great idea, once the females and male J's start pairing off, aggression will come along.

you have 11 J's so the odds off your fish breeding are pretty high, you could throw a convict in their, dont expect it to live long though.

Oh no there not all in the same tank or anything. there all sectioned off in different tanks and have dividers.

I picked up all the fish 3x 55s and 4x29s for free. and got a 90 for 30 bucks. Then for 200 all the filters, heaters, lights, food, chems, breeding blocks, 5 air pumps and a bung of other stuff. I think the guy said that there was 4 provin pairs out of them but im only going to keep The big one in the pick and maybe 2-3 females.

Good idea to have one male and 3 females in a 55

I had a pair of dempsy's for a while and couldn't get them to breed, and then I found another female to put with them. The original pair kind of banded together and kept the new female in an upper corner. After a while I took the second female out when it was clear that the male wanted nothing to do with her, and then some time after got a spawn from the original pair.

So my suggestion is to put another female in the tank if you have one, and let the pair bond strengthen. I also try to keep my tanks around 80 to keep fish in the happy breeding range, but you can either try raising or lowering the temperature temporarily to get them in the mood too.

so yeah ill try the 2 females in with the big guy. And a 55 is what the orignal owner was useing and i cant do it in the 330 because the eggs wouldnt last or they would get killed. And the 90 is drilled and dont have a sump yet but im gonna do SW in there.

well good luck with breeding, let us know how it turns out
