i currently have 3 senegals(2male, 1female) housed with endlicheri, giant gourami, clown knife, 2 irridescent sharks and a tsn catfish. ive ave these bichirs since they were very young. about 2 years. last night i saw courtshipand mating rituals by a male and female bichir. maybe its time to breed them>? what should i do? should i separate the two of them in a different tank? what are the optimal parameters for these fish to breed? i need to know first before doing anything drastic.

If they are courting, you don't want to change much, maybe throw in a breeding mop for eggs, then move the mop to a new tank for hatching.

you should put them in thier own tank and see what happens from there.

what's a breeding mop? if i leave them alone would they be able to defend their babies from their tankmates?

no they will not survive take them out to another tank or get one of those side hanging containers that they use in the petstore to hold the fish right before they put it in a bag.
put it in the inside of the tank and lower the water level in the tank so no fish can go inside

Hey there biboybaka, call me Jakob.
If your sens are really attempting/preparing breeding i would put the pair (the female and the male that is more likely to breed with her) and get them a 40-55g tank of their own too give them any chance, and the fry also.
...Too tired to write much more, will continue tomorrow..

But i want to tell you that once you get them to breed, get the fry out of the main tank the hardest thing is still left, getting the fry to survive.. A lot of people have gotten sens to breed but VERY VERY few of them has gotten the fry to survive.
The fry are very aggressive to each other so they have to be seperated one by one or they WILL eventually kill each other.

Good luck.

If they breed they will scatter the eggs all over the whole tank. Better to seperate them. They are cannabalistic. The best way to prevent it is a constant availability to food.

A) Lowered water level is NOT going to keep other polys out, or the two in question in, for that matter.
B) The ammonia buildup in a container that size would kill two breeding polys even IF they stayed in the container within hours.

Another tank is the only viable option you offered.

A divider might work, if it goes tight up against the lid.

A breeding mop is just a collection of soap free material that offers nooks and crannies for the eggs to be hidden in. Brand spanky-new actual mop heads have been used with good results, probably why they're called breeding mops.
