how to care for jungle vals

i have 5 jungle vals coming they will be here monday and i was wondering if i can just plant the plants in my all male tank and let them grow not doing or putting anything into my tank for them just give them light. i will be planting them in sand but its not super fine sand its pool filter sand sorta like small pebbles almost
