I have been doing some research on building a plywood aquarium for a few months now and am going to take the plunge on a 700 gallon tank. I will have it set up to do automatic water changes but how do you clean the gravel or do i even have to? the tank will be 4ft deep so most normal siphon hoses will not work. I was thinking about plumbing pipe underneath the gravel with lots of holes and turning it on maybe once a week to blow all the debrit free floating and be sucked into the filter. what do you think?

Sounds like a messy solution... YOU would end uncovering the "blow holes" and have to get a little dirty anyway to cover it all back up...

Why not just make your own siphon. Hose adapter, clear pipe and an adapter of sort.

OR.....

Get the largest siphon that you could find and attach a long handle to it! Or pay a company to do it! A company like "Aqua FX" around here in Michigan....

Hoep this helps...
