my friend gave me his eheim pro 2 canister, and hes had it sitting for 2 years with water in it, i open it and i threw up, it smells like sewage, whats the best way to clean the insides? bleach?

i went ahead and used bleach, and im washing it out real good, letting it air dry, it still has a stink to it :irked:. also i went to the eheim website to order more media and it wont let me add any items to their cart :(. does petsmart or petco sell the medai for the eheim canister pro 2 2026 models?

Did you also get the instruction manual for this filter? What kind of shape is the filter in? Does it have all the parts?

I would clean it with bleach like you already did, leave the 'hard' media in it but remove the 'soft' media (pads or floss). Put a cup of bleach in it, fill with fresh water then hook up the filter and put both the inlet & outlet pipes into a 5 gallon bucket full of fresh water. Plug it in and let it run for an hour.

Your best bet to buy media is usually online. I buy from BigAls or Drsfostersmith when it's on sale.

he never had fish in his aquarium with this filter. he was doing a fishless cycle with a tank and he just quit, and let the filter sit there for 2 year, never drained it. and yes i have the manual and all parts with it. he even gave me the original box.

Try circulating the bleach through the filter like I suggested. You may have to do this a couple times. The Ehfimech (tubular shape) and the EhfiSubstrat/Pro (rock like or cocoa puff shape) can then be boiled in a pot on the stove. This will help flush out any remaining bleach residue & yucky stuff that may be left. The 'hard' media shouldn't have to be thrown out unless you can't get rid of the smell.

Just buy new coarse (blue) and fine (white) pads if the bleach/boil procedure works for you. Also make sure that you completely rinse out any remaining bleach residue from the filter by running fresh water through the filter using the same procedure I suggested before. Then let everything dry out and do the smell test again. If you're satisfied with the cleaning, set it up on a small tank, if you have one, & let it run for awhile. You can always add some snails to see if there are any issues.

After the bleach you can try vinegar if you still need more cleaning. Same procedure. It probably just needs to soak for a while.

I would probably boil it for 5 minutes at a good rolling boil. Just make sure the pot is large enough that it won't boil over. If you have to, split the media into manageable amounts to accomplish this.

uh i had a bucket full of water and some bleach, had my intake and outtake in the bucket, goto start it up and its making funny noises, the pump is trying to work but it aint, its sucking no water in. what could be wrong? i got everything together like it should, since my friend gave it to me straight from his tank, where it was working, and its set up the exact sameway, without the pads, like you said though. :( i hope its not shot.
