I keep reading that some fish (like kuhli loaches and panda corys) do better with sand substrates instead of gravel, since they can be injured by the sharp gravel. I've never actually seen an aquarium set up with sand instead of gravel, though. I'm wondering, how would you go about keeping a sand substrate clean? I use a normal syphon-type cleaning tube on my gravel . . . but if I used this on sand, wouldn't it just suck the sand right through the tube? Not to mention stirring up a lot of sand into the water?

Use a heavier sand like pool filter sand instead of playsand.

I just hold the syphon a half an inch or so above the sand and suck up all the stuff on top. At least every two weeks I stir the sand up before I use the syphon. This will get debris that are buried in the sand to come to the surface as well as release any gasses that have built up in the sand.

THANKS THAT HELP ME TOO CAUSE I PUT SAND IN A 30 TO TRY THE STUFF OUT B4 I PUT IT IN BIG TANK
