I just put the pool filter sand that I bought into a rubbermade tote and rinsed it for a couple of minutes while swirling it around with my hand. My tank cleared up within six hours after I added the sand to my tank. Unfortunately I can't say the same for crushed coral.
I just picked up sand from the beach today myself and rinsed it outside in a plastic tote with a garden hose; just keep filling up the bucket till the water overflows and usually all the silt and fine sand will overflow too. Keep swishing the sand with your hand as its filling too. If you cant get it completely clean it's ok, your filter will do the rest. I'm always using sand now, i find it looks more natural and its easier to clean than gravel, good luck
I bought 2 meters of eheim pipe (below) from my local fish shop that i use , if you have a gravel vac you could just take the end of that & use the pipe that comes with it . I prefer to use pipe as it is thicker than a gravel vac pipe so takes less time .
