Well, today I got a pretty good deal on 2 55 gal fish tanks $130 for 2 tanks/2stands/2 filter (one over the top one gravel)/2 heaters/ a bunch of other stuff (ph test, food, pump, decor ect). In both tanks there is Gravel and I was wondering what the best way to clean the gravel is? My dad recommended putting the gravel in a strainer (couple cups at a time) and run it under hot water while moving the rocks around? Anyone know a better idea or why that wouldn’t work? Do I need to use any chemicals to clean them?

Im no experienced fish keeper, but I did that exact thing, put them in a strainer and rinsed them off with hot water.

That's what I was going to suggest.

You could put it in like a 5 gal bucket....add some clean water, stir the gravel around in it a bit and drain the water out and do that a couple times. Although the stainer sounds better, the 5g bucket would be easier. That is how I rinse the sand I add to my tanks, in buckets.

I've used both the strainer and 5g bucket methods. Both work fine. Buy a strainer from the $1 store so you don't piss your mom off using the household strainer.

I've always used the house strainer!

But that method works very well. It may take a while, but you'll save lots of money on new gravel.

i cleaned my gravel with a large rubber maid tub and an old window screen that still had the frame around it than put large trash bags on the patio and put the gravel on and rinsed it 2 to three times. put the screen over the tub the gravel on the screen, empty the tub, so it does not over flow

i always boil mine in a huge pot for about 10 mins, certainly makes the family wonder whats for dinner!
