It's still pretty small and young with a lot of growing to do.Certain foods may help and down the road possibly an added female or two for it to get into breeding dress and really show it's colors for.

Cichlids color in general are effected by multiple things.
Stress, Food, tank mates, environment, the presence of opposite sex, even the color of the substrate or the lack there of will change the color or intensity of the fish.

When I first set my tank up here in Panama, after cycling, but before the plants had grown into a thicket, and most decor was light brown, my wild caught Andinoacara tended to mimic the surroundings of the tank.

After the plants filled in, and there was more variation of color of decor, and dark areas (they have also matured a bit over that years time, with maturity also often comes color..

Are you sure that's male? Looks female to me.

This is what I was thinking too, but the pictures aren’t the best for trying to verify gender. The white on the dorsal rays and haziness just makes me think female.

Is he a proven male?

I’ve seen the best color from mine when there is driftwood in the tank. One tank in particular that gets colored from tannins really makes their colors pop.
And like duanes duanes said plants/decor will make a difference. The more natural the tank and the safer they feel the better they will look.
