So I have a 20 gallon tank that Im either going to make a salt or brackish tank for a green spotted puffer or some marine fish. How does brackish differ from salt, do I use marine salt or aquarium salt and how much do I use per gallon? Also Id like to add a background to the tank, I plan on using paint, what kind of paint do you guys recommend and for a salt tank im thinking blue background, or should I just go with black?

You need marine salt, completely different from "aquarium" salt they sell as a "tonic" for freshwater fish (which is actually just normal kosher table salt sold in a fancy package for 20 times the price).
A lot of SW guys use blue paint. I'm not sure what I would use.

Hello...

I used Oceanic Natural Sea Salt Mix from Petsmart. A $5 bag (1.45 lb) was enough to take my 20g to 1.008 SG. The hydrometer was $13. I was surprised how easy it was.

You could paint, but if you're looking for simple blue or black, you can get a tape on background that's blue on one side, black on the other for around $5. It's simple, easy to change and ready immediately. If you do paint, go with latex.

Good luck!

You're going to need a much larger tank than 20g for an adult GSP. How about a figure 8?

Figure 8s are cool but nobody here seems to sell them, a gsp would be good for quite a while in a 20 but of course I plan on getting a larger tank for him when the time comes.

I'd look further for an F8, as even 30g is a bit small for a fish the size of a Nerf football.

Yeah, larger aquariums are tough for apartments .
