I got a 180g a few days ago, filled it up, went and bought 2 AC110s.... and then realized they don't fit on my tank. The plastic trim at the top of the tank is too thick to fit the AC110 over. Any suggestions on how to make a hole large enough for the tube of the 110? Thanks.

I wouldn't, personally. That plastic "trim" isn't just to look nice. It is also there to keep the sides from bowing out under the pressure of the water in the tank. Without them, it is quite likely that either the glass will break, or (more likely) that a joint will come undone. If you absolutely "have to", I would suggest either a dremel or a heat gun depending on what you have in mind to do.

I have to agree. I would look for some other way to mount. If you realy want to cut it though a dremel. Good luck and I hope everything comes out o.k.

I've notched the plastic trim on many tanks over the years without any problems. I just notched one a few days ago to fit a float-valve for an automatic water changer. I don't remove the whole piece of trim, only the part on the inside that supports the glass lids. You can score it with a razor knife and snap off the piece you want to remove with pliers. Better yet use a hot knife to cut (melt) it. A hacksaw blade works on an empty tank, but the bits of plastic sawdust are a pain in a full tank.

I wouldnt reccomend this at all, but i had a really old beat up tank with no plastic trim exept for a tiny remnant on one side. It was up for six years before i sold it to get a bigger tank.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I used an gross old soldering iron and just melted the inside edge of the trim like Dan F suggested. I couldn't return the AC110s, because I bought them on kijiji (Canada's version of cragislist).
