i always wondered how you guys with the 100 plus gallon aquariums cycled them. Is there some kind of special method? It probably takes ages too.

I usually used a mix of all the water from my other tanks. One water change day would produce around 500 gallons of cycled water.

The same way you cycle any other tank.

I fishless cycled our 300 gallon tank. It took over a month to get the tank cycled. We're upgrading to a much larger tank and plan on an instantaneous cycled tank by connecting an Ultima 4000 to the 300 gallon tank a month or two before the big move. On moving day, we'll just connect that Ultima to the new tank. Since we will have a 330 gallon sump, we might connect the wet/dry from the old 300 gallon to the sump, or we might just throw the bioballs from the wet/dry into the new sump. With the same bioload, but 7 times the dilution factor, and all the biological media from the old tank, there should be no cycling problem.
