I've tried searching the threads but didn't find (or at least didn't recognize) the answer to my question. Here goes: I put together my first wet/dry in a 20 gallon high which came as part of a drilled 75 that I bought used. The previous owner had only filled it with pad material, and I wanted to upgrade so I fully equipped it.

I'm confident based on what I've seen sold in the shops that it'll easily handle the 75, but what I'd like to know is how to calculate the capacity of my wet/dry so that I can upsize but not overwhelm.

The area of bioballs is 10" x 12" x 9". Below that is a 2 inch layer of lava rocks, plus 2 bags of Aqua Clear ceramic rings, size 70. I went heavy because it's intended for either rays or Altum angels. So, how do I calculate in order to know the capacity of my filter? I figure this will be handy with this, plus when I build more in the future.

Plus, next time I'll leave more space between the padding and the top!

well coralife states that you need 1 gallon of bio balls per 45-60g of tank. Though you would have enough bioballs for upto 240g IMO your sump is only going to be good for about an 80g tank.
